Change is constant. So is our hunger. And it is clear that our appetites are literally shaping the small and querida stretch of asphalt on 24th Street between Mission and Potrero in San Francisco. These days folks come for cheap tacos, wacky ice cream flavors, and sleek delis. But what I love are the shops that radiate generosity over the hum of fluorescent lighting. In these places we share conversations that only get warmer in their repetition.
Founded in 1965, Dominguez Bakeryon the corner of 24th and Alabamais the inspiration for Piel Canela in this exhibit. Early on Sunday mornings 4th generation baker Alex Hurtado begins making churros. They usually sell out after the second mass lets out at the church next door. Crisp, creamy, and dulce it's one of the best things you can eat. The scent of cinnamon and sugar (and sometimes his cousin Jesse Quiles chocolate churros) is a 24th Street classic.
This installation is an homage to the sweet smell of a corner bakery.
